Prepare yourselves, this is woeful.

Quote:
The evening shadows were draping themselves over the little house, and Nanna Walker lead the pair outside onto the verandah. They settled on ancient overstuffed arm chairs, the dogs at their feet as they sipped the wine and watched the evening close in on the garden.
They talked of nothing much, observations about the changing sky, the healthy state of the garden and the sounds of the chooks in the semi darkness.
Once the sun had finished setting, and the air around them was still and purple with twilight, Nanna Walker poured them each a second glass of wine.
"No, really, Nanna, I can't, I'll fall asleep right here on the spot" Maddy protested
"You can and will," Nanna Walker replied firmly, "No arguments"
"Respect your elders" Sean said.
"Exactly, my darling boy. Now... let me think.... it's... one pinch and a twist to the left"
"Pardon?" Maddy said.
Nanna Walker dusted her fingers over each glass, turning them a quarter turn to the left as she did so. She handed Maddy the glass and said "Now, raise your glass and look over the garden"
Maddy shrugged and did as she was told. For a moment she could see nothing through the red heart of the wine, but then as soon as blinking the garden behind the wine seemed to light up, each detail striking and strong as though bathed with midday sun light. Maddy gasped and lowered the glass, the vision disappearing as she did and so that all she could see was the darkening evening.
"What - " she began
"Shhh" said Nanna Walker, "I think Sean is having a moment"
Maddy turned to look at Sean, who seemed to be almost in a trance, gazing around the garden through his glass with wide eyes. "Maddy, can you see this?" he said softly.
Maddy murmured "Yes, I can, what is it?"
Sean shook his head, his eyes never leaving the show before him "I don't know."
Nanna Walker was sipping her glass and giggling. "Maddy my love, you're going to miss the best bit"
Maddy slowly rose the glass in front of her, the garden once again appearing brilliantly lit. As she watched, a hundred or more lights appeared in the bushes, and she fancied she could hear laughter on the breeze.
"Nanna? What is this?"
"You don't remember?"
Maddy gazed around the garden in wonder, and something in her mind suddenly triggered - yes, suddenly she did remember.

At the tender age of seven she had spent the school holidays with Nanna and Grandpa Walker, sleeping in the spare room and waking up every morning at 6 to walk the farm with Grandpa, tending to cattle and generally getting in the way. Grandpa Walker wouldn't let her help with the feeding as the cows would get excited and he was scared she'd be trampled, so at 6:30 in the morning he'd send her back tot he house where Nanna Walker would be cooking the breakfast for herself, for Maddy and for Grandpa and a couple of the workers who started before the sun came up. Here Maddy would help with pouring tea, brewing it strong and dark like the men wanted it, and adding more and more milk until it was cool enough for her to drink.

Nanna Walker would spend the day showing Maddy how to tell a weed from a plant, and where the chooks that ranged all over the garden were likely to lay their eggs. By the end of the second week, Maddy knew all the hiding places and was able to bring in all the eggs. The afternoons she would spend running with the terriers, nanna walker's special pets who loved to go rabbiting even though they weren't very successful at it. They'd flush the rabbits out of the bushes and chase them down, but leave them alone if they got too close. Neither dog seemed to want to end the chase with a kill, so rather than reducing the numbers with their teeth, nanna walker used to say they were trying to reduce the rabbit numbers with heart attacks.

In the evenings Maddy would have a bath and a mug of cocoa. Nanna Walker used to wrap her in a soft thick blanket and the two of them would sit in the garden as the sun went down, watching the fairy lights as they lit up the night sky.

Oh yes, the fairy lights, scattered amongst the plants, floating down from above. Maddy had often thought of her holiday with a smile, but she'd forgotten the nights, and the fairy dancers laughing with joy as they spun their patterns in the air.

What is a "chook"?

Also, is this "raw", no edits? Pretty decent.

Chooks lay eggs, so I'm guessing chicken.

Or maybe velociraptors.

Chook = Chicken and the only editing was to fix the copious amounts of typos.

That is maybe one of the best things I've ever read.

I'm doing it again. I know Angie doesn't get it, so I'mma try to asplain.

For some people it's a personal challenge, and for some people it's a chance to actually make time to write, and for some it's just something fun and silly to do. I suppose it feels like "Why is everyone wanting to be a writer all of a sudden?" because it all happens in the same month, so people you might not know have an interest in writing are suddenly all about the wordcount.

For me, personally, writing is something i love to do, but don't have the confidence in what I write to keep it going. Like a lot of people I'll write a page, read it over and decide it's crap and not worth going on with. Nano is all about writing as MUCH as you can, not as WELL as you can, and at the end of it, the idea is you'll either have something you can work on and polish, or at the very least something you've created from nothing in a month.

It's not at all about creating fine art, or the great American (Australian) novel. It's just about writing, writing without a care or a worry. Which is why I love it.

I've never fancied myself much of a writer, but I do like to sketch and draw.

And then I heard about someone doing something called NaNoDrawMo -- 50 drawings in 30 days.

So I shan't be writing but I'll be sketching. I'm looking forward to it. Tempted to do at least some mix of media - some pencil, some pen, some digital, etc.

I've always wanted to write and I have ideas, but I have trouble stringing that many coherent thoughts together. Also my ideas always seem best fit to graphic novels even though I have no artistic talent.

Isn't that a pain? I need to connect with an artist.

I offer major affirmations for the creative efforts y'all undertake.

Be sure to share (at least snippets of) the results!

I would love to do NaNoWriMo but with school and full time work not sure if I can pull it off. Next year maybe!

We have a display at work but it's just called "Write a Novel in a Month" but a bunch of titles like "30 Days to Your First Novel!" and "Writing for Dummies". I was like YAY! NANOWRIMO! and my coworkers were like "Whuh?"

I collaborating with an artist once upon a time. I'm not good at effectively communicating my ideas.

I am one. But I am not really a comic book style artist, although I did do an awesome superhero version of a good friend of mine years ago. I don't think I have a scan of it anywhere though.
