Hello Friends,

I am trying to polish my art skillz (Z added for illustration of how far I need to go) and have been polling my friends and family for what they look for when they are looking at art.

One friend is big on Color Studies, another on Impressionism and so forth. When y'all look at art, what are you looking for?

I hope to eventually turn this into moneys, at least hobby supporting moneys and a wide range of opinions is always a good thing.

It's tricky - I like what I like, you know?

I tend to like right angles, though.

Hypercubes. All hypercubes all the time. And don't think you can skimp by getting non-equilateral hyperrectangles either.

I generally enjoy either photorealistic or stylistically exaggerated imagery of life. Webcomics are great for the stylistic variations, and I'm a big fan of pencil and charcoal work for more realistic works.

I like pretty. I know, I know very general, but still. Vibrant colors, soft angle, etc.

I like strange, I guess. Dali, Picasso, M.C. Esher, that sort of thing. And I do like some Andy Warhol as well. I also really love nature photography.

Jasper Johns, Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein, Mark Rothko, Chuck Close, Bob Arneson. Also, I reviewed a Gordon Cheung exhibition yesterday and I was impressed. But the images online do not do the colors justice.

They never do.

Thank you all for your answers, I can use these as a good jumping board. I will probably follow this up with a painting or two and I would like to get your views on them, what you would change according to your tastes and so on.

Thanks again! Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

I'm a huge fan of a variety of stuff, but as an artist myself, I look at composition and color more than anything else. I like a huge range of things, from paintings and drawings to prints and buildings and photographs. I'm big on everything from photographer Ed Weston to architect Antoni Gaudi to Lichtenstein to Dali to Monet to Wassily Kandinsky to Edward Hopper and far more than I could possibly list here.

Are you taking classes? Classes can be a huge help in terms of learning the structure behind art. Color theory, composition, proportion, lighting, etc etc etc.

Unfortunately not, the best I can do right now is read James Gurney's site. Its been very insightful. I also follow the wet canvas community. There are a lot of pros on the site and they usually do step by step on their work and they have a lot of good classes and links.

This is mostly just to get a sampling of modern tastes and also for personal curious-ness fulfilling.

I'm a Roger Dean fan. You're familiar with his work if you're a fan of Yes (the band).

Time to do some serious self reflection.

While you're not on the dope!
